Carl Rath, bassoon, Retired from college teaching after 48 years. Rath is a Regents-approved Emeritus Professor at the University of Oklahoma where he taught and performed for 31 years. During his tenure, he performed in the Oklahoma Woodwind Quintet at several music education conferences, Carnegie Recital Hall, and in Europe, as well as releasing the first Woodwind Quintet Christmas album, A Christmas Delight, in 1990. For 22 years he was Principal Bassoon of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and performed in the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble. He has soloed with bands and orchestras in the U.S., Taiwan, and Austria and collaborated in numerous chamber music performances in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. After Oklahoma, Rath returned to his alma mater, Lawrence University, and taught there for another 11 years. Rath studied bassoon, percussion, and composition at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music earning his degree in Music Education in 1975 with ‘Distinction in Performance’. In 1977, he earned the MA degree in Music Performance from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. His performances have been heard on European and American public radio programs and on five CDs. Rath is active as a recitalist and clinician in bassoon and chamber music, performing and teaching at several double reed days in the U.S. and at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. He has taught at the Red Lodge Music Festival since 1980.
